Worth a Look: Are We Discouraging the Benefits of Taking Time Off?
One of the nastiest (and hopefully fading away) behind-the-scenes performance metrics in law enforcement, specifically as one advances through the organization, is the view that those who actually use earned time off are not committed.
In worse cases, huge unused time banks are viewed as a badge of honor and indicative of hard core dedication. Baloney, balderdash and bunkum. Healthy organizations are built on healthy people.
Those that never take time off might just be having a hard time of letting go, delegating, planning for succession or, overestimating their value to the organization.
“Are the People Who Take Vacations the Ones Who Get Promoted?” by Shawn Achor, gets to the point.
